Washington, D.C., August 4, 2026 – The National Parents Union applauded the bipartisan introduction of the READ Act in the U.S. House of Representatives, bringing Congress one step closer to advancing evidence-based literacy instruction and addressing America’s reading crisis.
“Parents have been sounding the alarm on literacy for years because they see the consequences every day when their children struggle to read,” said Keri Rodrigues, President of the National Parents Union. “The READ Act is about making sure schools use what we know works. This bipartisan bill gives educators the tools and training they need and gives more kids the opportunity to become confident, successful readers. We urge Congress to keep this momentum going and get the READ Act to the President’s desk.”
Introduced by Representatives Lucy McBath, Erin Houchin, Josh Harder, Kevin Kiley, Suzanne Bonamici, and Burgess Owens, the READ Act would strengthen teacher preparation, expand evidence-based literacy instruction, and help states and school districts implement the science of reading.
The House introduction of the bill builds on recent bipartisan progress in the Senate, underscoring growing momentum to tackle the nation’s literacy crisis and help more students become strong readers.
