Statement from National Parents Union in response to Trump’s claims of Economic Success

Washington, D.C., January 13, 2026 – National Parents Union President Keri Rodrigues issued the following statement in response to President Trump claiming “inflation is defeated” in a speech to business leaders in Detroit:

“President Trump says ‘inflation is defeated.’ Parents know that’s not the reality they’re living. Families aren’t experiencing a recovery, they’re facing a daily economic crisis. With one in four parents unable to afford basic necessities, the cost of rent, groceries, childcare, and healthcare is pushing households to the brink.

Tariffs and trade disruptions haven’t eased the pressure, they’ve made essentials even more expensive, and parents feel it every time they check out at the store. Families don’t need a victory lap or another slogan. They need real relief.

If you want to understand the real economy, start by listening to families, not financiers. It’s time to end the economic gaslighting and deliver solutions that actually lower everyday costs.”

Read NPU’s recent poll, which found widespread frustration with President Trump’s handling of economic policy, with everyday costs driving how they judge the economy and what they demand from the nation’s leaders.
