May 6, 2025, Boston, MA – The National Parents Union released the following statement ahead of U.S. Senator Patty Murray’s forum on the Trump administration’s attempt to dismantle the Department of Education:
“The National Parents Union strongly supports the efforts of U.S. Senator Patty Murray and leaders in Congress to exercise oversight over Trump’s reckless actions to dismantle the U.S. Department of Education.
“We are deeply concerned about the elimination of key offices and programs that were explicitly funded and authorized by Congress. These actions are not only unconstitutional, they are putting millions of students at risk. Now more than ever, it’s critical for Congress to convene parents, educators, and education leaders who can personally speak to the impacts that these actions have had on our nation’s children.
“Over the past 100 days, we have seen funding freezes, mass firings, and the elimination of vital student services. The shuttering of regional Offices for Civil Rights and the complete dismantling of the Office of English Language Acquisition are just two examples of how vulnerable student populations, especially English learners, students with disabilities, and children of color, are being abandoned.
“Congress must push back on Trump’s attempts to attack our public education system. Parents across the country are watching and we demand accountability. We cannot allow political agendas to override the educational and civil rights of our children.
“The National Parents Union stands ready to support every effort to restore lawful operation at the Department of Education and ensure that every child, no matter their ZIP code, has access to the education they deserve.”
