The President’s FY26 budget proposal requests $55.7 billion for the U.S. Department of Education – a $12 billion (or 15.3%) reduction compared to FY25. This dramatic cut raises serious questions about ED’s ability to fulfill its statutory responsibilities, and it will place immense pressure on states, which will be forced to choose between backfilling federal education cuts or protecting other essential services like
healthcare. Furthermore, the administration has left approximately $8 billion in FY25 funds “unallocated,” raising serious concerns about impoundments, recissions bills, and other attempts by the administration to withhold funding that has already been appropriated. Click here to read more.
The House reconciliation bill poses a direct threat to the health, well-being, and educational opportunities of millions of American children and families. If passed, it would slash essential programs like Medicaid, SNAP, and Pell Grants–undermining everything from access to school meals to special education services. It would squeeze state budgets and cripple the essential programs that serve your most vulnerable constituents. School voucher and education savings account (ESA) programs are expanding rapidly across the country, with the reconciliation bill proposing the first national voucher program. Though often promoted as a way to help low-income families access private education, the data tell a different story. In any given state, at least two thirds of voucher recipients had already attended private schools; meanwhile, the programs far exceed their initial budgets, further devastating funding for the vast majority of students who remain in public schools.
