Washington, DC — January 30, 2026–The National Parents Union issued the following statement in response to the passage of the bipartisan Labor–HHS–Education Appropriations package:
“The National Parents Union applauds Congress for passing the bipartisan Labor-HHS-Education Appropriations package, a critical step that protects essential education programs and puts students and families first.
This bill keeps vital Department of Education programs and grants funded and rejects efforts to weaken, hollow out, or dismantle the Department’s core mission.
With student achievement still lagging and a national literacy crisis, lawmakers from both parties did what parents expect: they put our kids over politics.
Now Congress must hold the Department of Homeland Security accountable. Democratic leaders were right to hold the line on the DHS funding bill until civil rights and constitutional protections are addressed.
Congress must immediately continue negotiations to lock in strong oversight language and strengthen sensitive location protections. Every school should be safe, welcoming, and focused on learning, not fear. Federal funding must uphold both community safety and fundamental freedoms.”
