National Parents Union Statement in Response to Government Shutdown

Washington, DC, October 1, 2025 – National Parents Union President Keri Rodrigues released the following statement in response to the government shutdown:

“The federal government has officially shut down and families across America are once again left to bear the brunt of political dysfunction.

The National Parents Union is furious at the reckless disregard shown by our elected leaders, who have failed to do the most basic part of their job: keep the government serving hard working families.

Parents don’t deserve this chaos. As prices climb at the grocery store and uncertainty continues to grow – this chaotic shutdown centered around raising healthcare costs for hard working Americans is irresponsible and unacceptable.

The refusal by Republican leadership to extend healthcare coverage for 22 million Americans is cruel and completely out of line with a family first agenda.

We are raising children in an era of uncertainty, and families deserve better.

We demand immediate action to reopen the government, restore healthcare protections, and put families first. Every day it’s getting tougher and tougher to be a kid in the United States – we don’t need manufactured crises or endless political theatrics. It’s time for Congress to pass a bipartisan continuing resolution that does not raise healthcare. Do. Your. Job.”
