Statement from Keri Rodrigues on Supreme Court Allowing Trump to Gut the U.S. Department of Education

July 14, 2025, Washington, DC – Today, National Parents Union President Keri Rodrigues released the following statement in response to the Supreme Court’s decision, which allows the Trump administration to gut the Department of Education.

“The Supreme Court chose politics over the Constitution and, in doing so, put millions of American students at risk. This ruling gives the green light to an outrageous and unlawful power grab by President Trump, who is attempting to dismantle the U.S. Department of Education without any action from Congress.

“The Department of Education is not some wasteful bureaucracy. It is how 13 million students access financial aid. It is how civil rights are protected in schools. It is how students with disabilities get the services they are legally entitled to receive. It is how Title I funds are distributed to the communities that need it most. Firing over half the Department’s staff overnight is not about efficiency. It is about shutting down a federal agency to serve a political agenda.

“This is not just a policy disagreement. It is a constitutional crisis. Congress created the Department of Education, and only Congress has the authority to eliminate it. The President does not get to cancel laws by firing the people needed to carry them out. The Supreme Court’s decision to let this stand, despite clear findings of unlawful conduct by two lower courts, is a failure to protect the rule of law.

“The National Parents Union will not stand by while our children lose access to critical resources and protections. We will fight in the courts, organize across the country, and hold every elected official accountable. Our kids’ futures are not optional. They are worth fighting for.”
