National Parents Union Blasts Final Passage of One Big Beautiful Bill as Betrayal of Working Families

“Republican lawmakers chose to leave families behind — prioritizing the wealthy over working parents and cruel cuts over care.”

July 3, 2025, Washington, DC – Today, National Parents Union President Keri Rodrigues released the following statement in response to the final passage of Republicans’ cruel “One Big Beautiful Bill,” which will gut healthcare and hurt hardworking families across the country:

“True patriotism means keeping our promise to every child by protecting their future and strengthening the communities where they learn and grow. Instead, Republican lawmakers chose to leave families behind — prioritizing the wealthy over working parents and cruel cuts over care. Gutting healthcare and taking food away from millions of children is nothing to celebrate this Fourth of July. It’s a betrayal of what America stands for.”

The legislation includes significant cuts to Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act, placing nearly 20 million Americans at risk of losing health coverage. In North Carolina alone, an estimated 650,000 people could lose access to care. Missouri faces 265,000 at risk, and in West Virginia, 82,000 residents may be affected. It also slashes Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits, threatening access to food for over 2 million families across the country.

“The families hit hardest are those already working to keep a roof over their heads and food on the table. These are parents doing everything they can to give their kids a fair shot,” Rodrigues continued. “This isn’t fiscal responsibility – it’s fiscal cruelty. Lawmakers are gambling with the health and future of America’s families just to hand out tax breaks for billionaires. We will not forget. And we will not back down.”
