May 13, 2025, Boston, MA – National Parents Union President Keri Rodrigues released the following statement in response to the Republican anti-family, anti-child spending cuts:
“Make no mistake: these cuts will not just lead to sick and hungry children, but combined with fewer programs and services at school and in public health, children will die. Stripping away basic nutrition, healthcare, and educational support for political reasons is a national disgrace. What kind of nation targets babies and children to score political points? What kind of leadership looks at a hungry child and says, ‘Tough luck’? These are not hard choices. These are the wrong choices.
“These cruel and reckless Republican proposals to gut Medicaid and SNAP programs that are the lifeblood of survival for millions are anti-family and anti-child – and a direct attack on the health, safety, and dignity of hardworking families. Our children deserve better. Investments in healthcare, food security, and education are not negotiable – they are foundational to America’s future.
“Our message to Congress is simple: do your job. Stand up for families. Reject these callous, dangerous cuts and start investing in America’s future and our children. We demand a government that puts the American people before profit, children before corporations, and our next generation before billionaire tax breaks.”
Background:
Medicaid provides essential healthcare for nearly 37 million of children in the U.S. and serves as the fourth largest source of federal funding for our public schools. Gutting this program would eliminate access to healthcare and undermine vital school based services for millions of families across the country who are already struggling to make ends meet and will have dire consequences.
In addition, one in five children rely on the SNAP program as their primary source of nourishment. These proposed reductions would deepen child hunger and hardship at a time when families are still reeling from the economic pressures of inflation and high costs of living, issues that President Trump and Republicans promised to address during the 2024 election campaign.
