Last month, NPU’s Charlie Barone shared concerns about the future of federal guardrails for state assessment systems after attending the “National Forum on the Future of Assessment and Accountability” in Dallas. In a follow up piece at Education Next entitled “Rethinking Accountability,” Barone points out that while, when it comes to accountability, waivers come with distinct risks, they also present new opportunities.
Barone: “There is wide support among policy experts, advocates, and parents for federal guardrails around assessment…In contrast, hardly anyone thinks ESSA’s accountability provisions are doing much to drive school improvement…[W]hen it comes to accountability, reimagining what we expect from each level of government and being strategic about which policy levers we pull could be a game-changer in dramatically improving outcomes for our nation’s students.” The message: if your state asks the feds to do something less, hold their feet to the fire for doing something more.
