National Parents Union Statement on the California Wildfires

January 8, 2024, Boston, MA – The National Parents Union released a statement on the California wildfires:

“Right now, millions of families across Southern California are scrambling to evacuate and find safe areas to shelter their children, their pets and their loved ones during this unprecedented wildfire disaster raging through the area. Our hearts are with them as they struggle to navigate these difficult challenges – as so many other families across the country have also had to scramble to adapt to the new normal we face as we deal with a changing climate and weather patterns.

This situation is yet another heartbreaking reminder of the urgency required to support families and communities facing the growing reality of climate-driven disasters. Homes, schools, and community centers—the very heart of our neighborhoods—have been lost, leaving countless families displaced and struggling to rebuild their lives.

Unfortunately, these climate events are increasing at an alarming rate and are not going away. As we witness the increasing frequency and intensity of wildfires, it is imperative that we adopt proactive strategies to protect and support families before, during, and after such crises.

 This includes:

  • Ensuring Immediate Relief: Families need access to clear and accurate information, safe temporary housing, mental health resources, and emergency educational services to ensure children’s learning is not disrupted during their most vulnerable moments.
  • Building Resilient Infrastructure: We must prioritize investments in fire-resistant school infrastructures, community centers, and housing to mitigate the impact of future disasters. We will stand with California families as they rebuild in the wake of this tragedy.
  • Strengthening Emergency Preparedness: Local and state governments, in partnership with community organizations, must develop comprehensive plans to ensure that families can evacuate safely, have access to critical supplies, create contingency plans for continuing education and receive timely communication.

As families confront the loss of their homes and stability, the National Parents Union stands ready to amplify the voices of those affected and push for urgent action. Together, we must hold leaders accountable to ensure communities are not just rebuilt but fortified against future crises.

Our thoughts are with the families impacted by these wildfires, and our commitment remains steadfast: advocating for policies that prioritize safety, equity, and resilience for all families.”
