March 3, 2025, Boston, MA—The National Parents Union congratulates Linda McMahon on her confirmation as the next U.S. Secretary of Education. As Secretary McMahon seeks to implement this administration’s agenda, parents demand pragmatic and common-sense leadership that focuses on school classrooms—not bathrooms.
Too many of our children are struggling because of classrooms managed on the local level that feel unsafe and massive learning gaps leaving our children to face consequences that are dire and irreversible—not just for their individual futures but for our country’s global competitiveness, national security, and economic growth. In assuming this critical role, Secretary McMahon must immediately confront our literacy crisis and not cede to political ploys and culture wars that advantage politicians at the expense of students.
Families nationwide are deeply concerned about extreme proposals to eliminate the US Department of Education and urge that Secretary McMahon focus on strengthening and reforming the department to better serve students, families, and educators and ensure every single child receives a high-quality education, no matter their zip code. This means maintaining a strong federal backstop to protect the safety of our children and to maintain accountability to the state systems that have historically failed them in previous generations.
We urge Secretary McMahon to exercise bold leadership on behalf of families and children and articulate a clear vision for where this administration is taking American public education into the future. Secretary McMahon, time is not on the side of our children when they’re not reading or doing math on grade level. We need to build up, rather than dismantle an institution that will plunge American families further into chaos. The stakes could not be higher. It’s time to get to the real work of providing every single child with the choice and opportunity to reach their god-given potential.
