November 6, 2024, BOSTON, MA — The National Parents Union President, Keri Rodrigues, released a statement after Donald Trump won the 2024 presidential election:

“The National Parents Union extends its congratulations to President-Elect Donald Trump and Vice President-Elect JD Vance on their victory.

As predicted, this was an election decided in the grocery store. The voices of families frustrated by the economic pain we face, deep concerns about keeping our kids safe and giving them access to high quality education has been heard loud and clear.

Now, it is time to get to work.

The passage of an expanded child tax credit must be the top priority for the next Trump administration as it will be transformative for parents struggling to meet rising costs, helping to ensure that all children have the opportunity to thrive. We were deeply encouraged to see President Trump advance this as a key priority on the campaign trail and stand ready to help make it happen.

It is also clear in listening to Black and Latino families, especially, that Republicans have made great strides in advancing education solutions that are a priority, namely expanding access to high quality teachers and school choice. That is why we strongly urge this administration to work with allies across the political aisle and continue to invest in public school choice options, which is one of the keys to economic mobility — and has the support of 94% of American families.

We also know that America is facing a literacy crisis that must be urgently addressed. The societal costs of illiteracy are extremely alarming as the inability to read costs U.S. taxpayers $224 billion annually.  That is why we are calling on the next administration to implement evidence-based reading strategies to ensure that all children, regardless of background, are equipped with the foundational skills necessary for success.

On behalf of families across the U.S., we stand ready to work with the new administration on a range of issues that we know are important to each and every community.

Together, let us continue the work of advocating for policies that uplift every child, family, and community in this great country.”
