NPU Issues Statement Following evacuation of elementary schools in Springfield, Ohio

Reckless and irresponsible comments from those seeking the highest office in the land should not be tolerated. Read our statement concerning the unfolding situation in Springfield, Ohio. Let’s never forget to teach our children that words have consequences:

“Today’s evacuation of elementary schools in Springfield, Ohio, is a stark reminder that words have consequences. When political leaders, particularly those seeking the highest office in the land, use rhetoric that fuels fear, division, and misinformation, it is our children who pay the price.

In this case, reckless and irresponsible comments from the Republican Presidential ticket have exacerbated tensions, contributing to an environment where schools are no longer seen as safe spaces. As parents, we send our children to school each day with the hope that they will be protected, nurtured, and educated. Yet once again, our kids are caught in the crossfire of political grandstanding.

At the National Parents Union, we stand with the families of Springfield and all parents across the country who are demanding that our leaders do better. Our communities should be places of safety and opportunity, not collateral damage in the race for political power. It is time to recognize the weight of their words and the ripple effect they have on our communities, particularly on our most vulnerable — our children — who are watching us.“
