September 4, 2024, BOSTON, MA — The National Parents Union released a statement from NPU President Keri Rodrigues:
“Kids in Winder, GA left their homes today, said goodbye to their parents and will never return home because they were victims of yet another horrific school shooting.
Guns are the number one killer of kids in the United States. Leaders across this country remain complicit in what can only be described as a national disgrace and an unforgivable failure to our young people.
What we know preliminarily, at this very early moment in the tragedy is at least four more lives lost today due to gun violence and possibly dozens more injured — a horror that has become all too common in this country. How many more people must die before our leaders wake up? Our hearts break for the families shattered by this senseless act, but heartbreak is not enough – we need policy change and action. And we need it NOW.
The time for thoughts and prayers has long passed. We are demanding real action—stronger gun control, universal background checks, bans on assault weapons, and immediate safety reforms. The blood of innocent victims is on the hands of those who refuse to enact meaningful change. We will not tolerate any more excuses or delays.
We are in the midst of a critical election campaign and it is time for candidates of both parties, and everyone up and down the ballot, to take a stand for the families they serve to clearly state their positions on these common sense gun safety policy actions that the National Parents Union supports.
Enough is enough. This madness must end. We demand justice for the lives lost today and for the countless others who have been victims of preventable gun violence. The time for action is now.”
