July 25, 2024, BOSTON, MA — The National Parents Union released a statement following the passage of the Kids Online Safety Act.
The National Parents Union (NPU) is thrilled to see the United States Senate advance the Kids Online Safety Act- with 70 co-sponsors, this is a landmark bill aimed at protecting our children in the digital age. As long-time advocates and supporters of the bill,we believe that it is a first step to addressing the urgent concerns of parents across the nation who seek a safer, more secure online environment for their kids.
We extend our deepest gratitude to Senator Blumenthal and Senator Blackburn for their unwavering leadership and dedication to this important issue to American families. We also extend our gratitude to Senate Majority Leader Schumer for his support of the parents and families who have been waiting for a solution for too long.
Parents have long been concerned about the myriad risks their children face online, including cyberbullying, exposure to inappropriate content, and the potential for exploitation. The Kids Online Safety Act provides essential protections by establishing a “duty of care” on digital platforms, enhancing privacy, and promoting greater transparency and accountability.
The National Parents Union has consistently advocated for stronger measures to protect children online, and the Senate’s actions are a significant victory for families nationwide- we look forward to swift action from the House of Representatives and for President Biden’s signature. As we move forward, we remain committed to working with lawmakers, educators, and tech companies to ensure the effective implementation of these protections and to continue championing the safety of our children in all aspects of their lives.
