January 17, 2024, Boston, MA– The National Parents Union Senior Director of the NPU Center for Policy & Action, Ariel Smith, released the following statement in support of a potential bipartisan tax deal to expand the child tax credit for low-income families:

“Parents across the country are continuing to walk a tightrope trying to keep their families fed and cared for – and the time has come to show us that Congress is willing to finally listen to the real priorities of American families. This expansion of the child tax credit is long overdue and would finally provide families with much-needed relief. In addition to benefiting 16 million children, the package also addresses another critical issue facing American families – affordable housing, initiating the building of 200,000 affordable housing units across the country.

The National Parents Union has been fighting for the child tax credit expansion because of the remarkable impact it had on families during the COVID-19 pandemic. For millions, it was a lifeline, marking the largest drop in child poverty ever recorded, and once the program lapsed, child poverty increased from 5.1% to 12.4%, which underscores the urgent need for action.

This bipartisan tax package is an investment in hard-working families. It is an investment in the future of this country. And it is an investment that Congress must make immediately.”
